Mylar bags are an incredibly popular food storage tool. Foods sealed properly in mylar bags can last a tremendously long time, particularly dry goods and freeze-dried food items.

Choosing the right vacuum sealer for mylar bags is essential for effective long-term food storage. Mylar bags are different from regular vacuum bags, so it’s important to use a sealer that can accommodate their unique qualities.

Types of Vacuum Sealers

There are different types of vacuum sealers, each suited to specific needs:

  • Handheld Sealers: Lightweight and easy to use, these corded or cordless models provide quick, temporary storage. They create a mild vacuum, making them perfect for short-term freshness.
  • Suction Sealers: Commonly used at home, these countertop units include built-in impulse sealers and require special vacuum bags. They’re great for long-term food storage, providing a reliable airtight seal.
  • Chamber Sealers: Designed for larger jobs, chamber sealers create a deeper vacuum within a sealed chamber, making them highly effective for preserving food and other items. These are ideal for commercial or heavy-duty use.
  • Vacuum Hose Models: With a vacuum hose attachment, these sealers allow you to seal a wide variety of storage containers, such as mason jars. Some suction and chamber models also offer this as a handy, versatile feature.

Many models have useful features like automatic vacuum and sealing functions, making the process simple and consistent. A timed mode helps ensure an even seal, and using a vacuum hose attachment opens up more options for sealing different types of containers beyond bags.

Vacuum Sealers for Mylar Bags

For sealing Mylar bags, it’s important to choose a vacuum sealer that can handle their thicker material. Chamber vacuum sealers are the best option, as they create a strong vacuum in an enclosed chamber, giving you a tighter, more effective seal that’s ideal for long-term food storage.

Another great choice is an impulse sealer. These sealers use direct heat to close Mylar bags without creating a vacuum, which is perfect if you’re adding oxygen absorbers to keep out air. Impulse sealers are reliable and give a sturdy, airtight seal suited for long-term preservation.

Some suction sealers can work with Mylar, but many struggle because of the bag’s thickness. Models with adjustable settings may seal smaller Mylar bags, but they generally aren’t as dependable for this type of material.

If you’re looking for a quick, budget-friendly method, a hair straightener can seal Mylar bags in a pinch. Simply press along the bag’s edge to create a solid seal, making it a convenient option for occasional use.

Using Your Vacuum Sealer

Using a vacuum sealer is simple and helps keep food fresh longer. Start by placing the food inside a vacuum bag, leaving some space at the top. Open the sealer, position the open end of the bag in the vacuum channel, and close the lid securely. Most vacuum sealers have an automatic mode, so press the “Vacuum” or “Start” button, and the machine will begin removing air from the bag.

Once the air is out, the sealer will heat-seal the bag, creating a tight, airtight seal. Some models have separate buttons for “Seal” and “Vacuum” modes, which allows more control if you’re working with delicate items. After sealing, check the bag for any gaps or leaks to make sure it’s fully sealed.

In the case of Mylar bags, many vacuum sealers may not seal them effectively because of their thickness. In this case, use a compatible vacuum sealer or try sealing the Mylar bag with a hair straightener or iron after vacuuming, pressing down on the edge for a few seconds. Properly sealed bags will keep food fresh, protect from moisture, and prevent freezer burn.

Why it Matters

It is important to use a vacuum sealer that is compatible with mylar because if the sealer is not compatible then it is likely that there will not be a proper seal. This can negate the entire point of using the bag to begin with. Having a proper seal is the only way to ensure long-term freshness.
